Method for Calculating the Twelve Life Stages (Potaebeop)

The Twelve Life Stages are determined by using the Day Master (Ilgan) as the reference point and then observing its relationship with the Earthly Branches (Jiji) in the Four Pillars. The calculation method, called Potaebeop (Embryonic Method), differs based on the polarity (Yin/Yang) of the Day Master.

  • Yang Stems (甲, 丙, 戊, 庚, 壬): Start at the relevant Yang Branch of the elemental Triple Combination and proceed Directly (順行).
  • Yin Stems (乙, 丁, 己, 辛, 癸): Start at the relevant Yin Branch of the elemental Triple Combination and proceed Reversely (逆行).

Table: Yang Stem (甲, 丙, 戊, 庚, 壬) Calculation (Direct Progression)

庚 (Metal)
壬 (Water)
