What is the Four Pillars of Destiny?

The Four Pillars of Destiny, or Saju Myeonglihak, is an ancient Korean and East Asian practice that analyzes and predicts a person's life and destiny based on their exact year, month, day, and hour of birth. These four pieces of information form the "four pillars," and each is represented by two characters, resulting in the "eight characters" or Ba-zi.

Key Components of the Four Pillars

1. Yin and Yang & the Five Elements

This is the foundational philosophy. It explains the universe through the balance of Yin (陰) and Yang (陽) and the five elemental energies: Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金), and Water (水). The system interprets a person's life by examining the relationships (mutual generation and control) between these elements in their chart.

2. Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches

These are the characters that make up a person's chart.

  • Heavenly Stems: The ten celestial energies (e.g., 甲 Gap, 乙 Eul, 丙 Byeong)
  • Earthly Branches: The twelve zodiac animals (e.g., 子 Ja-rat, 丑 Chuk-ox, 寅 In-tiger)

A person's birth time is converted into a chart of these stems and branches.

3. The Ten Gods

Known as Sipsin, these are ten interpretive terms used to describe the relationships between the characters in the chart. They help explain a person's personality, wealth, career, and relationships with others.

The Four Pillars isn't just about telling the future. Its true purpose is to serve as a guide for self-understanding.
